Washington, DC -- Mayor Vincent C. Gray has proclaimed Thursday, April 21, 2011, as “Bully Free DC Day.” Jeffrey Richardson, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Affairs will read the proclamation at a rally sponsored in conjunction with the DC Safe Schools Coalition on the steps of the John A. Wilson Building at noon tomorrow (Thursday).

“Bullying is a problem that is increasingly terrorizing more young people at school,” Mayor Gray wrote in the proclamation. “Bully Free DC Day will help combat this problem…I call upon all the residents of this great city to join me in increasing public awareness about the growth and ill effects of the behavior we know as bullying.”

“Mayor Gray’s proclamation highlights his commitment to fostering an environment where all children and youth are able to learn and develop in schools and communities that are safe and supportive,” said Richardson. “Every child deserves a learning environment where every day is a bully free day and we stand firm in our support of all efforts to combat bullying in the District of Columbia.”
