What is Beautification Day?

Beautification Day was established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all DC public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Some of the tasks include: picking up trash, planting flowers, and painting exterior doors. It is a great way for the whole DC community to get together and support DC public schools.

Where and when is it going to take place?

Beautification Day will be held this year on Saturday, August 20, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers must register online.

How do we know what schools we are assigned to?

Upon registration, you will be able to choose from the list of participating schools. You will receive an e-mail confirming this assignment within 48 hours.

What should we bring that day?

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes. Be aware that your clothes might get dirty due to the nature of the tasks involved.

Who should we see when we arrive at the school?

Each school will have a Site Manager who will welcome volunteers and provide an overview of the day. Please make sure to register when you arrive and complete a participation form.

Is parking provided? Can we get schools that are metro-accessible?

Most schools have parking spaces that volunteers can utilize or find street parking near their assigned school. When you register, the list of schools indicates the sites which are near a metro station.

Is breakfast provided?

Breakfast will not be provided, but we will provide snacks and water for all volunteers.

What kinds of task will I be doing that day?

The list of tasks include: sweeping/washing the sidewalk, painting exterior doors, picking-up trash, planting flowers, trimming bushes, pulling weeds, laying mulch, etc. Volunteers will get their task assignments from the Site Manager when they report to their assigned school.

What safety precautions do I need to know about?

We encourage volunteers to sign-up for tasks that they are familiar with. Please be aware of your own physical limitations when volunteering that day.

Who do I contact with questions before or during Beautification Day?

You may call (202) 442-5447 or email dcps.beautificationday@dc.gov for any questions or concerns. On the day of the event the site manager will have a list of contacts.

Who should I contact if I have physical disabilities that limit the tasks I am able to do?

Please call (202) 442-5447 if you have any specific needs.

What time do I need to arrive at the school to work?

Volunteers are expected to arrive by 8:00 AM on Saturday, August 20, 2011.

Can I bring extra volunteers who have not signed up?

Please make every effort to sign up prior to August 15, 2011 to ensure that every school has volunteers.

What happens if it rains or any other weather-related issues?

Beautification Day 2010 will go on rain or shine! Some of the tasks may be limited or eliminated.
