Ward 5 Great Schools Initiative
Starting in summer 2011, DCPS began a community engagement initiative in Ward 5 to enhance middle grades options for families. That community engagement led to the Ward 5 Great Schools Initiative and plans for three new middle grades options in Ward 5. Academic and facilities planning is underway at each campus. Follow school links below to learn more about each program.
Since June 2011, DCPS has been working with the Ward 5 community to improve middle grades options in the ward through the Ward 5 Great Schools Initiative. With input received from the Ward 5 community, DCPS announced three distinct options for middle grades students opening in SY 2013 and SY 2014.
On November 14, 2012, at McKinley Tech, we shared updates on academic planning and construction at each of the three new middle grades options which will open over the next two years:

Quality elementary, middle, and high school programs provide the skills and experiences students need to be successful in college, career and life. Ensuring that families have quality middle school options is important to DCPS. This year, we have engaged parents and the community in Ward 5 to identify how to best support and strengthen our Ward 5 middle grade options.
In early November, 492 families gave us feedback on possible school configurations. This graph illustrates the combination of schools preferred by parents in Ward 5.
We listened. Below are highlights from our proposal (presented at Langdon EC Wednesday, November 16, 2011) to provide 1180 middle grade seats in Ward 5 in SY2013-14
We solicited feedback around these proposed middle grades options via surveys, parent organization meetings, school based meetings, and more. If you are interested in additional information about these proposals, you can review materials posted on the web including:
On Tuesday, March 6, at McKinley Tech, we revealed grade configurations for middle grades targeted to open as soon as August 2013.
Meeting attendees learned about the three options targeted to open in August 2013: PS-8 International Baccalaureate Education Campus at Browne EC; Arts & Language Integration Stand-Alone 6-8 Middle School at Brookland; Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) focus middle school opening inside McKinley Tech.
