Sarah Hillware, a 2011 graduate of School Without Walls, was crowned America’s Miss District of Columbia 2012 on Jan. 14.
“I am so excited to represent the capital of the United States of America. This is such a beautiful, diverse, dynamic and exciting city filled with intelligent, politically-savvy, poised and accomplished people,” Hillware said in a statement. “I am grateful and elated to be its delegate to the national pageant in July. … I can't wait to showcase the city that made me who I am this year and embark on a journey of community service, self-betterment and endless learning!”
A member of the first class to graduate from the School Without Walls dual enrollment program with George Washington University, Hillware is currently a junior in GWU’s Elliott School of International Affairs. She studies global public health and, upon graduation in 2013, will pursue a master’s degree in Public Health and a medical degree.
In addition to her studies, Hillware hosts “The Sarah Hillware Show,” an online radio show that airs Wednesday evenings and highlights local and global community efforts. She also serves on the advisory board for a nonprofit organization, volunteers regularly with four local organizations, advocates for youth issues on Capitol Hill, and serves as a mentor to a handful of teens.
The America’s Miss Organization places emphasis on philanthropy and service. Hillware plans to bring awareness this year to the theme: “Knowledge Is Power: Empowering People to be Their Own Best Health Advocates.” Hillware will compete in July for the national title.
Unlike many beauty pageant titleholders, Hillware has only competed in one other preliminary pageant, where she won the “Spirit of Miss DC Award” for enthusiasm and dedication.
“With the crown comes a responsibility that I am more than ready to take on!” Hillware said. “Thank you to everyone who has been there for me along the way - words can't describe how supported I feel. I can't wait to showcase the city that made me who I am.”
