Roosevelt High School student wins prestigious NAACP ACT-SO Medal
August 1, 2011 - Roosevelt High School senior Dominique Mitchell won the Silver Medal in the Entrepreneurship/Culinary Arts section of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) ACT-SO Awards and a $5000 scholarship to any Art Institutes school nationwide.
Mitchell demonstrated advanced techniques which the judges believed exceeded the skill set of a young person.
This was the second year that Roosevelt High school students participated in the ACT-SO Culinary Arts/Entrepreneurship category. The dedicated students from Roosevelt SHS spearheaded this mentoring partnership with Sodexo and Hyatt Hotels over the past two years. The Entrepreneurship/Culinary competition is now deemed an official category for all future ACT-SO events.
Mitchell won the Silver Medal with an Indian inspired menu featuring Curried Duck with Cucumber Salad and Roti. Rice Pudding with Raisins and Almonds was served for dessert.
