Ballou High School student Tiesha Hines had a chance to read her poem, “Ten Things I Want to Throw at You,” Wednesday during a poetry workshop at the White House.
Since February, 15 high school students from Ballou, Columbia Heights Education Campus, Wilson and Ellington have worked with regionally and nationally recognized poets in partnership with the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities.
Through the partnership, students met Secretary of Education Arne Duncan during an April 25, 2011 workshop at the Library of Congress.
At the Wednesday workshop at the White House, about 826 students had an opportunity to meet first lady Michelle Obama and perform their poetry in front of a crowd that included Poet Laureates Rita Dove and Billy Collins.
