Where We’re Going

We are dedicated to ensuring that our students can be successful and independent in communications, social skills and self-regulation of their behavior. To meet this goal, we have some exciting plans in store for the autism program at DCPS:

  • All students in autism classrooms will receive individually tailored instruction in academics as well as communication, social skills, positive behavior supports and life skills.
  • All autism classrooms have a small student to teacher ratio, with all teachers and paraprofessionals trained in ABA.
  • All teachers who work in autism classes and use the ABA method will receive weekly support and professional development from ABA coaches and will be evaluated on a rubric specifically designed for autism instruction.

In order to provide students with autism equal access to services throughout the District, the Office of Special Education has identified elementary, middle and high schools as sites for dedicated autism classes over the next few years. Our ultimate goal is for students with autism to get the supports and services they need at their neighborhood school and to have the opportunity to stay with the same set of peers throughout their education.
