Since LEAP’s inception in 2009, LEAP associates have contributed to key initiatives in food services, curriculum and instruction, health and wellness, and school operations. Our summer 2012 cohort provided support on such projects as the rollout of the Common Core State Standards in math, as well as provided feedback regarding the food in our schools and assisted in the development of a PSAT student resource center.
Students are expected to commit to a minimum of 6 hours per week, including a weekly professional development session from 4-6pm each Wednesday. The remaining 4+ hours/week dedicated to the LEAP internship will be structured according to each associate and supervisor’s schedule, but will typically occur within business hours.
While LEAP associates have many responsibilities, they do not work alone. Interns serve as part of a team in Central Office, under the supervision of a DCPS supervisor. LEAP associates will also be paired with a UELIP intern, who will serve as mentor to the student throughout their tenure with the program.
