DCIAA Athletics Handbook (Grades 4th – 12th)

All persons coaching interscholastic athletic teams in the District of Columbia Public Schools shall be expected to adhere to the following guidelines

How to become a coach at my local school?

  • You must speak with the local school principal.
  • If offered a coaching position you must complete an online application and clear a criminal background check before meeting with student athletes. (note: Non-DCPS or coaches not employed as a full-time DCPS employee may only report to the Fingerprinting Office on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 9-3pm.
  • Non-DCPS applicants must provide document of negative TB Test Results and clear the Mandatory Drug Test.
  • You must receive a coach ID with an expiration date (All coaches must re-certify every 2 years)

The Coach’s Pledge

The Coach’s Pledge extends beyond knowledge of athletics and reaches into the life of each of his or her players. It is one of the most important responsibilities in the school and involves at least the same level of commitment that coaches expect from their players. Mutual respect and team membership are to be expected equally of player and coach and, for the coach involved the following promises:

The Athlete's Pledge

Individual and team success in sports results from commitment. The extent to which young athletes are able to make such commitments reflects their maturity as well as their dedication to family, friends, school and team. Your coach already has made a similar kind of commitment. Read more »
