DCPS teachers are our city’s true stars. On November 1, 2010, the city of Washington came together at the Kennedy Center to salute the men and women of DC Public Schools who earned the honor of being rated Highly Effective in teacher evaluations. The event was sponsored by the DC Public Education Fund.

The program featured Jim Vance as host, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Mayor Adrian Fenty, Council Chairman Vincent Gray, Thomas Friedman, David Gregory, Darrell Green, and Second Lady Jill Biden, with performances by Chrisette Michele and Dave Grohl.

Ms. Benjamin was honored with one of seven “Excellence in Teaching” awards given out that night.

Ms. Benjamin consistently engages students with challenging work that allows them to explore the extent of their abilities. She teaches Physics B, Physics C, engineering, computer design, and robotics and has been teaching for 15 years. She is one of six members of the national Advanced Placement Physics Development Committee for Physics B, through which she participates in writing AP Physics exams.

During the 2009–10 year, an impressive 75 percent of her students passed their AP tests, a pass rate lower than the typical average for her classes. By fostering student interaction and promoting curiosity, students are able to expand their interests in Ms. Benjamin’s classes.
