July 5, 2011 - Brent Elementary’s Urban Birders joined Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar at the national presentation of the “State of the Birds” report. Secretary Salazar, along with Undersecretary of Agriculture Harris Sherman spent a half hour talking and bird watching with the students before they got to take part in the official press conference for the presentation.

The bird watching trip was the highlight of a year spent going on field trips every week including local birdwalks in the neighboring parks around Brent and trips to Fort Dupont Park, the National Arboretum, and Kennilworth Aquatic Gardens with nationally recognized bird and conservation experts.

The Urban Birders, a bird watching group led by Math and Science teacher Mike Mangiaracina, is comprised of nine students ranging from first through fourth grade who meet once a week for instruction on bird anatomy and identification.

Throughout their time in the club, students compiled “life lists” of all the birds they had seen, honed their identification skills, learning to recognize birds by sight and sound, and developed a love for nature and our local parks. Several of these students have continued their adventures with birds into the summer, and will be helping with scientific research on birds in Rock Creek Park.
