School Without Walls in Ward 2 to Reopen Aug. 31
Repairs have been made; Engineers have cleared the building for re-entry
School Without Walls High School in Ward 2 will reopen tomorrow, Aug. 31, 2011. All School Without Walls staff members and students are expected to report on-time Wednesday.
“I am happy to announce School Without Walls High School has been repaired and deemed safe for the return of our staff and students,” said D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson. “I want to thank School Without Walls Principal Trogisch and Eastern High School Principal Skerritt for their steady leadership during this challenging period.”
The decision to close School Without Walls came Aug. 24 after structural engineers from the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) thoroughly assessed damage sustained to two chimneys and the Bell Tower at the school, and believed the building to be unsafe for the immediate return of faculty and students. OPEFM staff and engineers have worked tirelessly to complete necessary repairs to the masonry in order to get the students back to school as soon as possible.
For the past two days, School Without Walls students have attended classes at Eastern High School in Ward 6. School Without Walls is the only school forced to relocate following the Aug. 23 earthquake and Aug. 27 hurricane, which damaged buildings and closed schools throughout the Washington, D.C., area.
