Chancellor Henderson named one of ‘The World’s 7 Most Powerful Educators’ in Forbes Magazine

This week, DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson appears in “The World’s 7 Most Powerful Educators,” a list compiled by Wendy Kopp, CEO and founder of Teach For America, and published in the Nov. 4 edition of Forbes magazine.

In choosing the educators for her list, Kopp explains, “Providing an excellent education for all students–especially the 16 million children growing up in poverty– requires extraordinary commitment. These individuals, who aren’t often in the national spotlight, demonstrate the leadership we need to ensure all children gain the skills necessary to get to and through college.”

In the article, a slideshow of top educators, Kopp notes, “Kaya stepped up to the chancellorship in a rancorous environment and brought the whole community's teachers, principals, parents, and civic leaders together in the process.”

"I am both honored and humbled by Forbes' decision to recognize my leadership, but every school district head understands there are no individual awards or accolades in public education. I wish the article found a way to recognize the roughly 7,000 principals, educators, school-based and central office staff who have endured so much change, yet maintained the passion and commitment to improving the quality of education for all children in the District of Columbia."

Other educators on the list include Harriett Ball, veteran teacher and mentor; Ana F. Ponce, CEO, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy; Scott Shirey, executive director, KIPP Delta Public Schools; Leslie Jacobs, advocate, Educate Now!; Ariela Rozman and Tim Daly, CEO and president, respectively, The New Teacher Project; Howard Fuller, parent advocate.
