The national Flood Rate Insurance Map (FIRM) is the official map of a community on which the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has delineated both the special hazard areas and the risk premium zones applicable to the community. The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and OCTO have created this online tool to help District residents, insurance companies and brokers to locate properties and buildings inside flood risk areas. Additionally, District and local community officials use FIRM to prepare for emergencies and to mitigate damages when floods occur.
