The internationally recognized Washington, DC, web portal—DC.Gov—won the 2005 Internet Best in Class (IBIC) Award. The District of Columbia received this award at the fifth annual Content Week Conference February 2. DC.Gov placed first in a category that included Fortune 500 company websites that service millions of global customers.
According to the award sponsor, the International Quality and Productivity Center (IQPC), the Best In Class Internet examines all Internets regardless of industry. DC.Gov was named the best Internet by a panel of independent judges consisting of industry experts, journalists and the previous year’s winner. DC.Gov was the only government website entry this year; as well as in 2004 when it received first runner-up honors.
“We were both strategic and responsive in selecting which online services and content to place on DC.Gov,” stated Chief Technology Officer of the District of Columbia Suzanne J. Peck. “The fact that this award included evaluation across all industries reflects the caliber of the District’s technology planning and personnel.”
The DC portal presents a “single face” of the District government for residents, businesses, visitors, and employees. Featuring 200 transactional applications and branded around the slogan, “Your City at Your Service,” the site received more than 12 million visits in 2005.
“We were impressed,” IQPC Conference Director Amy Thistle commented, “with the comprehensive array of resources, interactive applications and government services that DC.Gov offers the District of Columbia’s diverse residents, business people and tourists from around the globe. Their efforts to develop and continually enhance a user-friendly and cost-effective portal for the nation’s capital will set the standards of excellence for other Intranet and Internet professionals.”
