Statement from Mayor Vincent C. Gray on the Super Committees Failure to Agree on Deficit Reduction and Its Impact on the District

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray had the following reaction to the failure of the congressional “Super Committee” to agree on cutting the nation’s deficit in time for its deadline:

“It’s disappointing that a partisan tug-of-war has prevented the Super Committee from meeting its mandate. If Congress does not act in the coming months, Draconian automatic spending cuts will do significant damage to the District’s economy and put thousands of our people out of work. This is unacceptable for our nation and for our city. As the Mayor of a city that has responsibly balanced its budget 14 years in a row, this gridlock is particularly frustrating.”
