Washington DC 20001

BACKGROUND: Originally named the “Preparatory High School for Colored Youth,” and later “M Street School,” the school was renamed in honor of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar in 1916 with the completion of the previous building. Dunbar was the nation’s first high school for black students and boasts several graduates who are history makers or present leaders in their fields. The design for the new Dunbar promotes advanced learning, a healthy and comfortable environment for students and staff, and state-of-the-art technology.
