(WASHINGTON, DC) — Today Mayor Vincent C. Gray and his public-safety team launched the “BE SAFE This Summer” initiative as part of his “One City Summer Fun … Something for Everyone” comprehensive summer program.

“Ensuring public safety is one of the core functions of any government,” Mayor Gray said, in a kickoff event at Barry Farm Recreation Center. “The District’s public-safety apparatus will be operating at full force this summer, and a host of government agencies and community partners are working together to provide programs that will not only enforce the law, but also provide resources and programming to keep all our communities safe this summer.”

Mayor Gray was joined by officials from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS), the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), the Office of Unified Communications (OUC), the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), the Office of Victim Services (OVS), the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) and the DC National Guard (DCNG). They highlighted programs designed to foster safe communities throughout the District this summer, with a special emphasis on programs to keep children and youths safe and engaged in constructive and educational activities.

BE SAFE This Summer allows the community to participate in numerous summer programs geared toward public safety that are being offered by District agencies and community partners. These include crime-prevention tips, fireworks safety instructions, home-emergency-preparedness strategies, the MPD Junior Youth Academy and the MPD Band, HSEMA’s Alert DC mobile-alert system, the FEMS Smoke Detector Van and DOC re-entry services.
