(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray today announced that Ross Dress for Less®, the nation’s largest off-price apparel and home fashion retailer with over 1,000 stores in 27 states, will be opening its first store in the District of Columbia at Hechinger Mall on Benning Road Northeast, near the historic H Street corridor. Mayor Gray commended Ross managers for signing up for the One City • One Hire initiative, part of the Mayor’s job creation and economic development plan to help unemployed District residents find work.
“Ross has demonstrated its commitment to our One City • One Hire call to action by hiring more than 60 District residents, many of whom were unemployed,” said Mayor Gray. “We look forward to working with Ross to continue providing the company with qualified applicants to fill their current and future job openings.”
One City • One Hire is an innovative strategy that will encourage Washington metropolitan area employers to commit to hire at least one unemployed District resident. It is designed to serve as a catalyst to jump-start the Mayor’s pledge to put unemployed District residents – in every ward of the city – back to work.
“Since we rolled out One City • One Hire on September 8, more than 100 DC residents have been hired,” said Lisa M. Mallory, Director of the Department of Employment Services. “Additionally, there are almost 170 projected hires with 65 employers. To date, there are a total of 120 employer-partners participating in the One City • One Hire program.”
