(WASHINGTON, DC) —Mayor Vincent C. Gray today announced a job fair will be held Saturday, April 9, as part of his commitment to recruit qualified District residents for upcoming school modernization construction projects in Ward 8 and other wards.

The job opportunities fair will be held in conjunction with a major community event in Southeast Washington – the 12th Annual Business Meeting and Family Community Conference. It will be at Savoy Elementary School, 2400 Shannon Place, SE, from 9 am to 4 pm

Under the mayor’s pilot Workforce Incentive Program (WIP), the goal is to increase employment of District residents on locally funded projects. The initiative will first be implemented by the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) before eventually expanding to other District projects.

“As everyone is well aware, the unemployment rate in the District is staggering -- and in some pockets of our city it’s 20 percent or even higher,” said Mayor Gray. “We already met with and contacted many Ward 8 Workforce Development Organizations (WDOs), who will be primarily responsible for getting the word out about these job opportunities. The goal is for candidates to apply for work in tandem with being affiliated with a Workforce Development Organization. We encourage seasoned construction trades workers to apply but also want to make sure that other applicants are matched with skills training and support services.”

The pilot WIP initially involves six District-funded school construction projects totaling approximately $55.6 million. They are: Turner Elementary School modernization (Ward 8); Hart Middle School Phase 1 (Ward 8); Seaton Elementary School Phase 1 (Ward 2); Maury Elementary School Phase 1 (Ward 6); Emery Elementary School @Langley (Ward 5); and reconstruction of Takoma Elementary School (Ward 4).
