(Washington, DC) – The D.C. Department of Employment Services (DOES) is pleased to acknowledge the Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholarship has been awarded to Markus Batchelor. Markus serves as the Chair of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) Youth City Council and is the third consecutive MYLI Youth Leader to receive this scholarship. The Trachtenberg Scholarship is a four-year, full scholarship to The George Washington University (GW). Only nine awards are given each year. Previous MYLI winners are: Malissa Wilkins (Class of 2009) and Andrew C. Haynesworth (Class of 2010).

We are extremely proud that we can call such examples of excellence a part of the DOES family.”
The Trachtenberg Scholarship is based on an applicant’s class rank, GPA, SAT scores, teacher recommendations, leadership qualities, community service and extracurricular activities and achievements. The scholarship is open to all D.C. residents graduating from an accredited D.C. high school – public, private or charter – who can demonstrate financial need. The financial value of the scholarship exceeds $200,000 and covers tuition, room and board, books and all student fees. They are renewed annually if the recipient meets GW’s academic requirements. The graduation rate for Trachtenberg scholars is close to 90 percent.
The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) is a four-level, year-round leadership training and development program for young people aged 14-19 in the District of Columbia. The MYLI training model emphasizes practical, hands-on experience and a holistic approach to developing leaders for the 21st century. MYLI is offered through the Department of Employment Services’ Office of Youth Programs.
