BACKGROUND: Mayor Gray’s Sustainable DC initiative to make the District the most livable and sustainable city in the world includes efforts to reduce pollutants and emissions through the use of alternative fuel vehicles (or AFVs). The District’s fleet is a leader in the use of AFVs. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (commonly known as the stimulus), along with the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, enabled the latest expansion of the District’s alternative-fuel fleet. The vehicles were purchased in consultation with DDOE.
