WHAT: Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s Senior Leaders Seminar on Emergency Preparedness will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. The seminar will introduce the Mayor’s Cabinet to the fundamentals of the preparedness cycle and how city agencies can work together to prevent, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters that could impact the city. Over the past several weeks as the residents of the District and the nation have witnessed catastrophic natural events in Southern cities, reflected on the death of Osama bin Laden and face the reality of potential retaliatory acts and, here locally, dealt with a series of potentially dangerous substances mailed to D.C. Public Schools, we are reminded of how important it is that we take seriously our efforts to prepare our communities. This seminar is a first step for the Gray Administration in ensuring that the preparedness efforts garner meaningful results. At the conclusion of the seminar, the District of Columbia’s new Emergency Preparedness Mobile Outreach Center will be unveiled.

WHO: Members of Mayor Gray’s Cabinet will discuss the challenges presented by man-made, natural and terror-related events and how agencies will work together to ensure the city’s ability to effectively manage events large and small. The seminar will feature training on the District Response Plan (DRP), an introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS), and a three-pronged table-top exercise focusing on significant potential hazards facing the District of Columbia.
