(WASHINGTON, DC) – One City • One Hire partners Safeway and Rite Aid are developing a closer working relationship with the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES), which should translate into more jobs for qualified District residents. Both companies had human-resources representatives on-site at DOES Headquarters, located at 4058 Minnesota Avenue NE, to conduct interviews to fill management and other positions, and Mayor Vincent C. Gray was there to greet job seekers and meet with the employers to thank them for delivering jobs to DC residents.
“Safeway and Rite Aid have a wide variety of positions available for qualified individuals, from store managers and shift supervisors to clerks and night stockers. By joining the One City • One Hire initiative, they have committed to identifying and putting qualified District residents back to work,” said Mayor Gray. “In addition to these companies, my administration is aggressively working with businesses and non-profit organizations throughout the Washington metropolitan area to match District job seekers with available positions.”
On Thursday, October 27, DOES held employment pre-screening events for Safeway and Rite Aid and identified 180 District residents with the requisite skills and/or background who were seeking both entry-level and management-level positions.
“Our One • City One Hire model and pre-screening efforts are working,” said DOES Director Lisa María Mallory. “Area businesses are accepting Mayor Gray’s challenge to help address the District’s high unemployment crisis by giving qualified DC residents the opportunity to secure steady employment and gain a foothold on economic stability.”
Last week, 7-Eleven hired 26 District residents for two new locations, following a pre-screening event held at DOES. The new 7-Eleven located at Benning Road and 25th Street NE had its Grand Opening today.
