BACKGROUND: In his ongoing effort to elevate high school sports in the District of Columbia, Mayor Gray will announce updates to this year’s annual Thanksgiving Day tradition. The 42nd Annual Safeway Turkey Bowl will pit the Dunbar Senior High School Crimson Tide against the Coolidge Senior High School Colts for the Turkey Bowl Championship. The game will be played on Thursday, November 24, 11:00 am at Eastern High School, 1700 East Capitol Street, NE.

In a first, the game will air on the Comcast Network (TCN) on Friday, November 25 at 7:00 pm. TCN is available in more than 1.8 million homes throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. It will be available on Comcast SportsNet on-demand.

Earlier this year, Safeway agreed to strengthen and promote the Turkey Bowl by sponsoring the game. The company is providing the District with a one-time cash payment of $100,000 and $50,000 in in-kind donations over three years in exchange for the sponsorship.

Additionally, the new DCPS Athletic Director, Stephanie Evans, the first African American female to be appointed to the position, will be introduced by Mayor Gray and DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson. The new Athletic Director is a former college basketball coach with a background in psychology and human services.
