Mayor Vincent C. Gray Opens Job Fair That Connects Veterans with Employment Opportunities  

Approximately 400 Veterans Attend Event Sponsored by D.C. Agencies

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray and approximately 400 veterans attended an employment fair yesterday that connected area employers with former members of the United States Armed Forces seeking jobs.

“While veterans are some of the most thoroughly trained and highly skilled members of our workforce, they sometimes have more difficulty than the general population in finding employment once they’ve returned from overseas and retired from the military,” Mayor Gray said. “These men and women devoted their lives to defending our freedom and those of other people around the world, and I’m proud that the District government can help give back to them by connecting them with good job opportunities.”

The event drew major regional employers, including Giant Supermarkets; Pepco; AFLAC; the U.S. Departments of Defense, State, Housing and Urban Development, and Transportation; the Congressional Budget Office; the Transportation Security Administration; and other large businesses, government organizations and non-profit agencies.

The event was sponsored by the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) and the DC Office of Veterans Affairs (OVA) along with federal and non-profit partners.

“All employers will report back to OVA within two weeks on those hired and interviewed,” said OVA Director Matt Cary. “I believe this event was a success due to the strong collaboration between OVA and DOES plus representatives from several federal agencies as well as the Wounded Warrior Project. In addition, the Greater Washington Boys and Girls Clubs supplied the venue and the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars provided food and water. The employers were pleased with quality of the veteran job seekers and the veterans were satisfied with the type of jobs being offered and the quality of the on-site interviews.”
