(WASHINGTON, DC) — Mayor Vincent C. Gray has elected to devote extra funds from recently revised Fiscal Year 2011 revenue estimates to enable eligible youngsters on the wait list for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) to get summer jobs.

“I’m committed to our city’s youth,” said Mayor Gray. “Given the additional funds, I am delighted to provide additional support for the SYEP ‘Learn and Earn’ experience.”
Twelve thousand youth between the ages of 14-21 began work as part of the program on Monday, June 27, and applicants on the wait list will be assigned jobs to start on or before Tuesday, July 5. The program will conclude for all participants on Friday, August 5. It is unclear how many wait-listed applicants are still available to work, but if they are, the program could place hundreds more youth.

“We are pleased that the Mayor was able to identify funding to allow more youth to participate in the program,” said DC Department of Employment Services Acting Director Lisa M. Mallory. “The response and cooperation of all sectors -- public, private and community-based organizations -- has been quite favorable.” More than 460 employers are providing SYEP jobs. SYEP staffers are contacting wait-listed applicants this week to ensure that they receive the orientation and are properly matched.
