(WASHINGTON, DC) — Today, Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced the selection of a leading consulting firm, RSM McGladrey, to conduct an independent review of the United Medical Center (UMC). The firm is the nation’s fifth-largest provider of assurance, tax and consulting services.

“United Medical Center is an anchor in Ward 8 and is the ward’s largest employer. My administration is fully aware of its importance in providing much-needed services to the residents of the District and in particular, Ward Eight,” Mayor Gray said. “I am fully confident that the Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF) did its due diligence in selecting this firm, which will conduct an objective sustainability review of the United Medical Center.”

The Mayor noted that an action plan based on the recommendations from the review will be implemented and regularly monitored through monthly oversight meetings with UMC officials, the District’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer and the Mayor’s office.

UMC, originally known as Greater Southeast Community Hospital, was purchased by the District and reorganized as a not-for-profit corporation in 2009. The purpose of the purchase was to ensure that UMC continued to operate while the District prepared it for ownership and management by a private entity.

McGladrey has been specifically asked to assess the operations at UMC and provide recommendations to achieve the goal of a privately owned or managed hospital with a sustainable business model. The eight-week review will give special attention to the hospital’s current programs, financial situation, internal operations, capital needs and the different environment UMC will face after federal health-care-reform efforts are implemented. Upon completion, a team will be formed to evaluate the report recommendations and establish an action plan.
