(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today Mayor Vincent C. Gray and DC Public Library Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper encouraged District residents to read and discuss The Other Wes Moore, the book that is the featured selection for the 2011 D.C. Reads campaign.

“DC Reads not only encourages us to read, but also to love to read,” said Mayor Gray. “When our young people see adults who love reading, they begin to love reading.”

“The Other Wes Moore will invite District residents of all ages to have deep conversations about education, crime, identity and the human spirit,” said Cooper. “So check out a book, enjoy a program, and show people that reading can be enjoyable while discussing a truly powerful story.”

The Other Wes Moore examines the real-life story of two kids with the same name living in Baltimore. One became a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison for felony murder.

DC Reads encourages reading for pleasure by having city-wide celebrations focusing on one book. The Library has partnered with businesses, community organizations and schools to explore the book using discussions, lectures, and film screenings from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, 2011.
