(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray today sent a letter to members of Congress urging them to defeat H.R. 3, a bill that would permanently prohibit taxpayer funding of abortion but would also permanently restrict the District’s autonomy over how it spends its own locally raised revenues.
“The language used in this bill converts the District into a Federal property for the first time in its history,” said Mayor Gray. “This unprecedented affront to the sovereignty of a local and state government would never be contemplated anywhere else in the United States. Yet, the District is particularly singled out in the bill for such treatment.”
