Mayor Gray Congratulates District Resident for White House Honor
Samira Cook-Gaines Being Recognized as White House ‘Champion of Change’
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today Mayor Vincent C. Gray congratulated Washington, DC Women’s Business Center Director Samira B. Cook-Gaines for being recognized by the White House for her efforts to mentor budding entrepreneurs in the District.
“As I mentioned in my State of the District Address, we need to build a new economy in the District of Columbia that encourages our residents to innovate and build their own home-grown companies as well as attracting new firms and industries,” Mayor Gray said. “Through her efforts to encourage and support women in their entrepreneurial endeavors, Samira Cook-Gaines is one of many District residents who are making that economic vision a reality.”
Ms. Cook-Gaines founded the Washington, DC Women’s Business Center, where she provides women entrepreneurs with expertise and support in creating stable business foundations. She has worked to enhance community economic development in several states and communities throughout her career, and she previously worked in the District with our Department of Small and Local Business Development and our Business Improvement Districts.
The White House is honoring Ms. Cook-Gaines at a noontime ceremony March 7, along with 10 other local leaders from around the country who are also being recognized as White House “Champions of Change.” The program is part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative, and each week the White House highlights local leaders who are using their skills and expertise to improve their communities through activism, entrepreneurship and service.
