Washington, DC -- One year after the devastating Haiti earthquake, District of Columbia Mayor Vincent C. Gray released the following statement to mark the anniversary:

“One year ago today, a disastrous earthquake virtually leveled Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, tragically killing more than 300,000 people. The country is rebuilding. However, from all accounts, the recovery is slow and many Haitians are still barely surviving. Therefore, I encourage all Washingtonians to continue to keep the people of Haiti in their thoughts and prayers. Most importantly, all who are able should support the ongoing relief efforts with donations. There are many recognized charities that would welcome contributions today. I urge District of Columbia employees to take advantage of the D.C. One Fund to make payroll deductions to the various charities you can designate to receive your much-needed donations on a one-time or periodic basis.

“To the Haitian families living in the District of Columbia, you are especially in our thoughts as you remember people in your homeland who lost their lives or are still struggling. In the spirit of One City, I implore all residents to put their arms around our Haitian neighbors on this solemn anniversary.”
