(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray, government officials and representatives of the housing development team yesterday celebrated the groundbreaking of The Nannie Helen at 4800 – a mixed-use development that provides affordable housing, retail space and other needed amenities in Ward 7’s historic Deanwood community.
“Breaking ground on The Nannie Helen at 4800 is a pivotal milestone in the continued development of East-of-the-River communities in the District,” said Mayor Vincent C. Gray. “We thank everyone who came together to bring this project to fruition. This kind of development signals our commitment to increase the availability of affordable housing stock across the District, and is critical to the success of many of our Ward 7 residents."
Principals from the development partnership, A. Wash & Associates, were joined by Mayor Gray, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown, Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander, D.C. Housing Finance Agency Director Harry Sewell, and D.C. Housing Authority Director Adrianne Todman to formally kick off construction at the 89,000-square-foot site.
When completed, the facility will include 1,790 square feet of retail space; 1,900 square feet for an adult education and fitness center; 3,438 square feet of office space; and 70 affordable housing units, including one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments within a five-level, elevator-serviced building. The project will also include 41 residential parking spaces and replacement units for residents of the Lincoln Heights housing development.
The project is part of the over $2.3 billion worth of District-affiliated projects currently under construction across the city, creating thousands of construction jobs and permanent jobs.
“Projects like The Nannie Helen at 4800 are vital to the viability of historic neighborhoods in the District and important to our residents,” said Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor L. Hoskins. “We look forward to continuing our plans to build quality, affordable housing under the City’s New Communities Initiative.”
