Ambassadors representing more than 40 countries are joining Mayor Gray and other officials to sign an international community pledge of sustainability in the District. The pledge, which is coordinated by the State Department’s D.C. Greening Embassies Forum, encourages embassies to pursue and promote sustainable practices in eight areas: Energy & Buildings, Transportation, Water Conservation, Waste Reduction, Eco-Purchasing, Jobs & Community, Training, and Reporting & Action. Prior to the pledge-signing ceremony, the Royal Netherlands Embassy will host the “Neighbors in Sustainability” workshop on renewable energy, energy benchmarking, low-impact development and the River Smart program. The workshop will also feature a presentation by the GoDutch Consortium on how Dutch urban-renewal practices can be replicated in District neighborhoods, such as Barry Farm.

As part of the D.C. Greening Embassies initiative, the State Department coordinates sustainability workshops and events for the diplomatic community in the District. The District is developing cross-sector partnerships on sustainability with local businesses and universities. The Netherlands, a front-runner in Europe on sustainability issues, encourages sustainable design and practice in its diplomatic missions around the world. The Royal Netherlands Embassy, recently awarded with the LEED (Silver) certification, is taking a leading role in encouraging sustainability efforts among the District’s diplomatic community.

Mayor Gray, Ambassador Jones-Bos, and Under Secretary Kennedy will be available for interviews.
