Health Care to Hot Air: Why Urban Forests Matter

Urban Forest in the District of Columbia

Society has long held the belief that, in neighborhoods where crime, poverty, and desperation reign, trees are a luxury that simply cannot be prioritized. To be fair, that view is completely understandable. It would be hard to tell someone struggling to feed her children to grab a shovel and plant a tree.

But, from a neighborhood and city perspective, it is increasingly evident that the ecological, economic, and social value of planting and maintaining a healthy urban forest is one of the most beneficial investments a city can make.

Explore the Impact of Trees on…

  • Mind, Body, Leaf:  The psychological benefits of an urban forest can reduce property crime by 48% and violent crime by 56%!
  • The Wood in Your Wallet:  The economic benefits of trees can increase property value 20%!
  • Climate:  One acre of trees absorbs enough carbon dioxide every year to offset 26,000 miles of automobile exhaust!
  • Water:  Trees can keep 35,625 tons of sediment per square mile from entering waterways every year!
  • Energy:  Trees can reduce home heating bills by 28%!

Goals

To harness the many benefits of trees to better our communities.
