(Washington, DC) On Monday, October 1, 2012 the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will resume construction activities on the U Street NW Streetscape Project.
The project area includes a 0.4 mile segment of U Street, NW between 9th and 14th Streets.
The construction activities that were originally programmed to start this past June were delayed while DDOT awaited a permit from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority; however, all critical work remains on schedule to be completed by spring 2013, weather permitting.
As part of the first set of construction activities to resume beginning Monday, October 1 the contractor will be excavating trenches along U Street between 9th and 14th Streets to install new electrical conduits.
This work will begin on the north side of U Street at the 900 block and proceed west toward 14th Street one block at a time. After the electrical conduit work is completed on the north side the contractor will begin working on the south side of U Street. Work on the south side of U Street will begin at the 1,400 block and proceed east toward 9th Street one block at a time.
While the electrical work takes place sidewalk and building access will not be affected. However, during this phase, the curbside parking spaces located adjacent to the immediate work areas will be temporarily restricted between 9 am and 3 pm.
Once the electrical work is complete in a block, the contractor will initiate the sidewalk, curb and gutter related work activities. While this work takes place temporary walkways will be utilized to ensure pedestrian access to nearby facilities.
Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists are advised to use caution as they travel through or near this work zone and to plan ahead to minimize delays while traveling through the corridor.
