WASHINGTON, DC — The District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) Permits Division announced it has issued an all-time record high number of construction and occupancy permits. Permits approved through the first three quarters of fiscal year 2013 are up almost 25 percent from the comparable period for fiscal year 2012 and nearly 100 percent from the same period for fiscal year 2011. Based on current trends DDOT will issue more than 32,000 permits this year, setting a record for public space permits issued in a year.
Within a two-year period DDOT’s Permits Division has doubled the annual number of permits it normally processes due to enhancements such as the Transportation Online Permitting System (TOPS) and the various upgrades it continues to make to this system, on-going customer service trainings, permit application review trainings provided to Advisory Neighborhood Commission representatives and improved compliance efforts. As a result DDOT has gained greater compliance from those who need public space permits, whether to reserve a parking space for a moving truck as the District continues to welcome more than a thousand new residents every month, or for a new development being built, or for utilities maintaining, repairing and upgrading their facilities.
These initiatives have helped DDOT maintain an A grade status under Grade DC – a District project in which agencies are graded based on input from the public.
DDOT’s Permits Division is continuing to explore additional upgrades to improve and expedite the process for obtaining public space permits and their transparency by:
- Improving the Emergency No Parking signs produced through TOPS to include more and clearer information,
- Redesigning the website to make it more intuitive and simpler, and
- Making more information about permits available online for the general public.
