(Washington, DC) The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) will close northbound DC 295 (Anacostia Freeway) between Howard Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, SE at 10 pm on Tuesday, June 19 through 5 a.m. the following day. Motorists will encounter a single lane closure on northbound DC 295 beginning at 8 pm, followed by a full closure of all northbound lanes at 10 pm. All northbound lanes will be reopened by 5 am on Wednesday, June 20.

On Wednesday, June 20 (instead of Tuesday, June 19 as was previously communicated) motorists will also encounter a single lane closure in the southbound direction along this stretch starting at 8 pm, followed by 20-minute intermittent traffic stoppages beginning at 10 pm, through 5 am the following day.

The road closures and intermittent traffic stoppages will allow DDOT to demolish the existing 13th Street ramp and erect overhead sign structures over the Anacostia Freeway.

During the closure, signed detours will be posted to assist motorists in bypassing the work zone in order to get back onto northbound DC 295.

Detour

  • Northbound DC 295 traffic will be directed onto the inbound 11th Street Freeway Bridge (I-695 WB), to M Street, SE to access the eastbound Southeast/Southwest Freeway using the 9th Street, SE entrance ramp.
  • From the eastbound Southeast/Southwest Freeway, motorists will access northbound DC 295(Anacostia Freeway) via Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

Electronic signs will be in place to provide motorists advanced notice of the scheduled detour.

In the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions, this work will be rescheduled and an updated advisory will be distributed.

This closure is in addition to the previously publicized off-peak closures of the 11th Street bridges, related ramps, local streets, Southeast/Southwest Freeway and I-295/DC 295.
