New Temporary Traffic Patterns Planned for Riggs Road and South Dakota

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced it will be implementing a new temporary traffic pattern on Riggs Road and South Dakota Avenue in northeast Washington.

This traffic pattern shift marks a major milestone in moving towards completion of this roadway construction project.  This is one of the last major traffic shifts before shifting traffic into the final configuration.

The temporary traffic patterns are scheduled to start on or about May 21, 2012 and will entail the following:

Riggs Road between Chillum Place NE and 1st Street NE

• Eastbound traffic will be shifted to the two southern lanes. One through lane and one right turn only lane will be kept open.
• Westbound traffic will remain in its current configuration

South Dakota between Riggs Road and Kennedy St NE

• All traffic will be shifted to the east side of South Dakota Ave NE
• One southbound lane and one northbound lane will be kept open.  
• Drivers will be permitted to make a left on to Riggs Road

Variable message signs will be in place to guide travelers in the corridor around the new traffic pattern.  

Drivers and pedestrians are urged to stay alert and use caution when traveling by the work zone.
