Road Closures for June 25th Weekend Events 

Closures for the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle Start at 7 pm on Friday, June 24;
Closures for the Caribbean Festival and Parade Start at 6 am on Saturday, June 25;
Motorists May Encounter Delays in the Vicinity of the Event

Road closures planned for the Safeway XIX Annual National Capital Barbecue Battle on June 24-26 and the Caribbean Festival and Parade on June 25.

(Washington, DC) The Metropolitan Police Department have provided the following information about road closures for the Safeway XIX Annual National Capital Barbecue Battle taking place on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 and the Caribbean Festival and Parade taking place on Saturday, June 25.

In order to facilitate these events, there will be areas closed to vehicular traffic.

Safeway XIX Annual National Capital Barbecue Battle

The following street closings will begin Friday, June 24 at 7 pm and are expected to reopen on Sunday, June 26 at approximately 12 am.

Street Closings:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 9th Street to 14th Street, NW
  • 10th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to E Street, NW
  • 11th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to E Street, NW
  • 12th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to E Street, NW

Caribbean Festival and Parade

The following street closings for the Assembly Area and Parade Route will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2011 and begin at 6 am. The closures are expected to reopen as the parade passes and the area is safe for pedestrians and for vehicular traffic, we will then open the route to flow.

Assembly Area:

  • Georgia Avenue from Kansas to Allison Streets, NW
  • Kansas Avenue from Georgia Avenue to Webster Street, NW
  • Iowa Avenue from Georgia Avenue to Allison Street, NW
  • Upshur Street from Georgia Avenue to 13th Street, NW

Parade Route:

Parade begins at 11 am and will end by approximately 3 pm.

  • Parade will travel south down Georgia Avenue from Kansas Avenue, NW and proceed down
    to Georgia Avenue and Barry Place, NW.
  • V Street will be closed to move floats from Georgia Avenue to Sherman Avenue, NW to
    disband.

Festival Perimeter area:

The following street closings will begin at 6 am and are expected to reopen at approximately 9 pm.

  • 9th and Barry NW to Georgia Avenue NW (By the Sherman Tower dorms of Howard Univ.)
  • 9th and V Street NW to Georgia Avenue NW

Festival time will be from 1200 noon to 8 pm on Howard University’s parking lot, located at the
2200 block of Georgia Avenue, NW.

All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected
conditions.

Motorists could encounter possible delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the District Department of Transportation also remind motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.
