(Washington, DC) – The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is advising motorists and pedestrians that the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (aka South Capitol Street Bridge) will be closed to traffic three times next week for testing and the safe passage of a vessel.

At the request of the United States Coast Guard, DDOT will open the swing span of the bridge to allow for the safe passage of the Pride of Baltimore II at 4 am on Thursday, September 20 and at 5 am on Saturday, September. In addition, DDOT will conduct a test opening of the swing span at 4 am on September 16.

In each case, DDOT anticipates the bridge will be closed to traffic for approximately 2 hours.

To avoid delays drivers should use an alternate river crossing, including the 11th Street, Sousa (Pennsylvania Avenue) and Whitney Young Memorial (East Capitol Street) bridges.
