(Washington, DC) Beginning Tuesday, June 19, 2012, the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) traffic counting contractors will be placing count machines (“tubes” and other devices) on selected roadways throughout the District of Columbia.

Based on the location, the machines will remain in place for a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of seven days. Contractor technicians will be at the count locations to install and take down the machines and take photographs of the placed machines and to periodically check to ensure the machines are functioning properly.

All activity will be conducted with minimal disruption to travel on the counted roadways.

All devices will be labeled with the contractor’s name (WBCM / The Traffic Group).

The counts are required for the District’s annual submittal of data to the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Performance Monitoring Program (HPMS). The HPMS is a national level highway information system that includes data on the extent, condition, performance, use and operating characteristics of the nation's highways.

The counts are being conducted for DDOT under a contract with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
