(Washington, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has temporarily closed Benning Road, NE at the intersection of 42nd Street due to a gas line break. All motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to avoid this area until further notice. The District Fire and EMS Department (FEMS), Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and Washington Gas are on site and it is estimated the emergency repairs of the gas line may take up to 4 hours. Every attempt is being made to have this critical route reopened in time for the evening rush hour.
DDOT Traffic Control Officers and MPD are assisting in diverted all traffic in that area.
Eastbound traffic on Benning road is being diverted at 41st Street and westbound traffic is being diverted at 44th Street. In addition, traffic traveling on 41st street (south) heading towards Benning Road is being diverted to Fitch Street, NE.
Travelers are encouraged to use alternate routes including East Capitol Street, Minnesota Avenue, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue, 45th Street and 49th Street.
