DDOT Adds Left Turn Signal at M Street and Wisconsin Avenue

(Washington, DC) Eastbound motorists on M Street in Georgetown can now make a left turn onto northbound Wisconsin Avenue. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has activated a new left turn green arrow phase in the traffic signal cycle at this busy intersection.

Previously there was a “No Left Turn” restriction in place, but DDOT made the change this week at the request of residents and community leaders, after studying the potential impacts on traffic. To mitigate those impacts, DDOT eliminated 9 parking spaces on the south side of M Street, moved a loading zone farther west of the intersection and relocated a bus stop farther east of the intersection.

Eastbound Motorists on M Street can use all three lanes to travel through the intersection, but the left lane is also now a turn lane. This intersection also has heavy pedestrian traffic and drivers should use caution and watch for pedestrians crossing the street.

Pedestrians crossing Wisconsin Avenue on the northside of the intersection must wait for the walk signal, which will follow the left turn green arrow for vehicles on eastbound M Street. When pedestrians do cross they should continue to use caution and watch for turning vehicles.
