(Washington, DC) Starting next week, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will initiate the construction activities that are planned for the U Street NW Streetscape Project. The project area includes a 0.4 mile segment U Street, NW between 9th and 14th Streets. Construction is scheduled to start on or about Monday, June 11 with all critical work scheduled to be completed by spring 2013, weather permitting.

As part of the streetscape project the sidewalk areas will be reconstructed and widened and will include new landscaping; the roadways will be repaired and repaved; and the streetlights, traffic signals and storm drains will be upgraded.

Construction/Maintenance of Traffic

Construction work is scheduled to be performed between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday and may occasionally take place on Sundays and during overnight hours. All construction activities are contingent upon weather conditions.

The project will start at 9th Street, NW and progress west on U Street. The roadway will be reconstructed one block at a time, one side at a time.

At a minimum one traffic lane will be kept open in each direction at all times. Curbside parking will be temporarily restricted along the construction areas to create temporary pedestrian walkways. Access to the Metro station and bus stops will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.

Motorists are advised to stay alert as they travel through or near this work zone area and to plan ahead to minimize delays while traveling through this this corridor.
