(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is distributing subsidized transit passes today to dozens of District schools. DDOT added additional staff who worked through the Labor Day Weekend to process a backlog of applications for the School Transit Subsidy Program (STSP). Those passes are being hand-delivered to the schools now and the schools will distribute them to their students.
In addition, for the month of September, Metro will sell students a reduced fare pass if they visit a Metro Sales Office and show a student ID or a token blank form stamped by their school. Parents and students are reminded that they should visit their school’s office to apply for the Transit Subsidy Program. DDOT no longer accepts applications on a walk-in basis at the Reeves Center.
DC One Card Update
DDOT is moving forward with improvements to the STSP program announced last month, but will have to delay a key enhancement until technical issues with WMATA’s fare system can be resolved.
The changes announced last month will allow students to use their DC One Card to access subsidized student fares. Eventually students will only need to visit a metro sales office once every school year to purchase their initial pass and then they will be able to purchase passes at any metro station thereafter. However, due to the late emerging technical issues with WMATA’s fare system, the ability of students to renew passes at any Metrorail station is delayed until December and in the meantime students will need to renew their passes at one of four select Metro sales offices.
There are four sales offices located within the District, three of them convenient to Metro stations: Anacostia Metro station, Metro Center station, and 600 5th Street, NW. A fourth Metro sales office is located in Ward 4 at 14th and Buchanan Streets, NW.
Schools currently in the DC One Card student pass program (School Without Walls, Ballou, McKinley, Cardozo) and schools scheduled to join the program on September 16 (Anacostia, Roosevelt, Spingarn) will continue as scheduled. Students at these schools will need to visit a Metro Sales Office for the months of September, October, and November in order to purchase passes.
Schools at which students can buy passes directly in their school (Banneker, Bell, Coolidge, Duke Ellington, Dunbar, Elliot-Hine, Luke C. Moore, Phelps, Wilson, Woodson) may continue to sell passes directly at school until WMATA allows renewal at any Metro station in December. These schools will now join the DC One Card student pass program in December to purchase January passes. DCPS middle schools will also join the program in December, and DCPS K-5 and educational campuses will join in January 2012.
Please note this change will be phased in at all District schools over the next year. Until the changes apply to a school, all transit subsidy application paperwork and cards will be handled directly at the school level. Schools will be collecting the applications and submitting them directly to DDOT to expedite the processing procedure. The school transit subsidy program offices located at the Reeves Center will no longer be accepting those applications that are brought in-person for processing (the DDOT school transit offices at the Reeves Center will be closing permanently today (September 6).
