(WASHINGTON, DC) – Signs of the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative’s  (AWI) progress in creating a world-class waterfront in the District of Columbia are all around, but now anyone can follow that progress like never before at www.anacostiawaterfront.org External Website.

The latest information about new bridges, trails and other transportation improvements that are helping to drive a renaissance of the Anacostia River and surrounding neighborhoods is only a few clicks away.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) launched the new site to better inform the public about the important roles its infrastructure projects and partnerships are playing in the rebirth of the waterfront.

“The site allows us to share more information, better than ever before, about the exciting changes our program is making along the Anacostia River,” said Terry Bellamy, DDOT Director.  “Residents, businesses, regional neighbors and visitors everywhere now can use the site to learn about our projects, track their  progress and better understand how they fit into the District’s overall success in  transforming the Anacostia into a truly world-class waterfront. “

Since its inception in 2000, the AWI and DDOT’s portion of the program have made great strides.  Among the accomplishments are the rebuilding of the 11th Street Bridge, the majority of which will be finished in fall 2012, and completion of 12 miles of the ultimate 20-mile Anacostia Riverwalk Trail.

Future projects include a new Frederick Douglass Bridge to serve as a gateway to the District, the makeover of South Capitol Street into an attractive boulevard, improvements to the transportation patterns on M Street SE/SW corridor and much more.

All AWI projects and program benefits are profiled with descriptions, photos, drawings, maps, plans and other information at www.anacostiawaterfront.org External Website, along with current news, upcoming events, frequently asked questions and employment opportunities.
