(Washington, DC) Terry Bellamy, the Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), announced Angelo Rao has joined DDOT as the new Citywide Program Support Manager. In that capacity, Mr. Rao will be responsible for managing DDOT’s parking and streetlight programs. He is also expected to take the lead on implementing new strategies and technology to make DDOT’s operations more sustainable.

“Angelo is a dynamic, proactive and innovative leader with a wide range of experience and expertise,” said Director Bellamy. “He understands the engineering and the public realm, and can help us marry the two to improve our transportation system and support Mayor Gray’s vision for a Sustainable DC.”

Mr. Rao comes to DDOT with more than 32 years of experience providing planning, design and project management services for transportation planning; on-street parking management services; traffic calming planning and design; complete streets design; and multi-modal transportation projects.

He has served as Transportation Director/Assistant Engineering Director for the City of St. Petersburg, Florida; Transportation Operations Manager for the City of Toronto; and Project Engineer for the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario. He has also spent almost ten years in the private sector and established a “Complete Streets” program model for local governments in Northeastern Florida and the Tampa Bay Area. Most recently he served as the Culpeper Area (nine counties) Traffic Engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Mr. Rao earned his Civil Engineering degree in 1980 from the University of Toronto and is a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Michigan, and Florida; membership in Virginia is pending. He is a continuing member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).
