(WASHINGTON, DC) – The District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) has completed the major storm cleanup work in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and is now focusing on the final outstanding items including grinding approximately 146 stumps from trees felled during the storm.

UFA received more than 900 tree-related service requests following Sandy and generated 604 work orders for tree removal, tree pruning and debris removal. In all, 237 trees, out of an inventory of approximately 140,000 street trees in the District, were knocked down during the storm.

“I want to thank our Chief Forester John Thomas and his team at UFA for their tireless work,” said DDOT Director Terry Bellamy. “They mobilized the moment we knew the storm was coming and have been working ever since it hit to assist residents and return our city to normal.”

Now that the majority of the cleanup has been completed, UFA can resume its tree planting season which was interrupted by the storm. UFA is planting 6,400 trees across the District, the most ever for a single planting season.

Locations have already been selected for the current planting effort and can be viewed on DDOT’s Tree Planting Map.

Residents who wish to submit planting locations for next year’s planting season, to who want to report a damaged tree in public space, should call the Mayor’s Call Center at 311 or submit a request online at 311.dc.gov External Website.
