(WASHINGTON, DC) — Mayor Vincent C. Gray and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Interim Director Terry Bellamy today opened the newest Capital Bikeshare station outside the John A. Wilson Building. The new station is located at 14th and D Streets NW on the grounds of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

“This new location couldn’t be more convenient for our employees here at the Wilson Building, and I encourage them to take advantage of this healthy, environmentally friendly and cost-effective transit service,” said Mayor Gray. “Its success speaks for itself: Capital Bikeshare already has more than 10,700 members and we are committed to adding more bikes and more stations to meet the increasing demand.”

In addition to the new station opened today, DDOT is adding five additional stations in the downtown area at locations where old SmartBike stations have recently been removed. The new stations will be located at: 17th and K streets NW (Farragut Square), 12th and G Streets NW (Metro Center), 4th and D Streets NW (Judiciary Square); 8th and F Streets NW (National Portrait Gallery); and near the Foggy Bottom Metro Station.

DDOT also recently added 24 bike docks to existing Capital Bikeshare stations at 14th and G Streets NW (for a total of 23); 13th Street and New York Avenue NW (for a total of 23); 8th and H Streets NW (for a total of 33); and 17th and Corcoran Streets NW (for a total of 19).

The expansion of the system comes on the heels of a tremendously successful promotion that added thousands of new members to Capital Bikeshare. The deal through Living Social offered half-priced annual and monthly memberships for $37 and $12, respectively, and more than 8,000 of the coupons were sold to new and existing members. Current members can use the coupons to renew their memberships at the discounted rate.

“Capital Bikeshare’s success right out of the gate has far exceeded our expectations,” said Director Bellamy, “And the introduction of this new station—which will serve many of our downtown Bikeshare commuters—is just the start of our planned expansion. We will be installing at least 25 more stations citywide this year, while our partners across the river in Arlington are also expanding.”

DDOT is in the process of selecting locations for the additional stations, and a list of the proposed sites is now posted on the DDOT website at ddot.dc.gov/capitalbikeshare. District residents and cyclists will have an opportunity to get more information and provide feedback on the proposed locations at a public meeting on May 25. The meeting will be held from 6-8 pm in room 1107 at 441 4th Street NW.

The District would like to thank the General Services Administration (GSA) for providing the space for the new Bikeshare station that opened today at 14th and D Streets NW.

Capital Bikeshare is a bicycle-sharing program developed through a partnership between DDOT and Arlington County and operated by Alta Bicycle Share, Inc. Capital Bikeshare offers four different membership options: Annual ($75), Monthly ($25), 5-Day ($15) and 24-hour ($5) for access to a fleet of 1,100 bicycles located at over 110 stations across Washington, DC and Arlington, VA. Additional information about Capital Bikeshare is available at www.CapitalBikeshare.com External Website.
